Hollow Trees

this morning they felled
another hollow tree
from a shallow place
of narrow, dry streambeds
and a lake empty of water
but full of brown
leaf-withered debris
like a bowlful of crumbled dust
cradled by the bare old oaks
their vast branches
reaching across a bitter-cold sky
